Yesterday, I was driving back and forth to my son in Champaign, Illinois.
I was helping him unpack from moving into an apartment.
I was listening to music in my car, as I often do. The time in my car always seems to be solace time for me where I get to just ‘be’ and allow. As I was allowing, I began pondering our life together.
The relationship I have with my oldest is very special and different. He was born with a condition called spina bifida many years ago. Since that time, he has made huge contributions to his life and the world. He changed our lives for the better.
Ethan has always shown me how to make life better and how to be a better person. Since he uses arm crutches for short distances and a wheelchair for long distances, we always had to do life differently. Things were very different back when Ethan was born over 20 years ago. At a time when wheelchairs were not accepted, and the Americans with Disabilities act was barely emerging, we were frequently bombarded by issues related to people with disabilities.
A little history on the ADA… it was drafted and introduced to the House Senate in 1988. A broad bipartisan coalition of legislators supported the ADA while the bill was opposed by business interests (who argues the bill imposed costs on business) and conservative evangelicals (who opposed protection for individuals with HIV). HIV and other disabilities were also included in this bill. The final version was signed into law on July 26th of 1990 by President George H. W. Bush and was later amended and signed in 2008 with changes to be effective as of January 1, 2009. (compliments of Wikipedia)
As you can see, it has ONLY been in the last 15 years that we have seen the effects of this law activate in our society.
What does that mean?
It takes time for society to catch up with law. Even though in 2009 the law was effected it was still going to take many years for the world to catch up. At least the progress began.
Because Ethan was born at the time that all of this was just evolving, his entire childhood was built around showing people what COULD be done instead of what could not be done.
Life is about providing opportunity, not obstacles.
And that is what we did. This was not an easy task. We frequently ran into barriers. Everywhere we went, and everywhere we would go, raising a child with different abilities became a lesson in life for everyone involved. Everyone had to change their thinking in order to help this kid thrive. We all had to do things differently.
Daily, we had to find creative ways to make life happen in the best way possible.
We had no other choice but to live within the realm of inspiration.
There was no other way.
The only way to truly LIVE is to be in the allowing and the loving of life in the moment that life is hapening.
And as we shifted into living life in love and inspiration life responded by helping us do more and become more. And throughout the years we were always shown the way. The people, places and things ALWAYS showed up and so many opportunities presented themselves that we never thought possible before.
We had opportunities to travel across the country and the world to compete in adaptive sports, we had opportunities to funding and ways to compensate for his needs that seemed financially insurmountable just fall into our laps, and we had connections with doctors and hospitals at just the right timing to help Ethan in whatever endeavors needed to be handled according to where he was and what was happening. We were always lead, guided, and directed to all the right people places and things at exactly the right timing. It was as if the rockets of thoughts and ideas to solve any perceived problem always showed up at the same time.
Everything ALWAYS showed up. We never questioned what was happening and we just did it. Our intuitive knowing took us there. As ‘problems’ occurred, solutions happened.
Answer showed up in a way that just allowed everything to happen. This was at the heart of every miracle that ever occurred.
Through all of this I realized, in the center of our hearts, we already know the answer. Within our very being the answer arises.
I didn’t need anyone to tell me facts or prove to me that this is how it would happen or anything needed to happen. We were in our purpose and it just happened. There was no story.
It just happened.
We tuned into and taped into what we needed to do and the answers showed up;
immediately.
It just became.
Problems were not problems.
Problems were opportunities for answers.
It was that simple.
The solution always came in.
As soon as we needed to find a way to access a building a back door appeared. As soon as we needed the right therapists to show up to help Ethan get to the next level, the right person walked into his life. As soon as we wanted to find a way to get him involved in sports at a competitive level, the teams showed up. As soon as we needed a wheelchair, the funding happened. As soon as we needed a way for him to drive a car with only his hands, the accessibility experts happened. As soon as we saw that college was a possibility, the road to a degree happened. And on and on and on.
We ALWAYS decided that there was a way. We never dwelled on the limitation and always looked to the limitless. If we fell, we got up. If we were defeated, we remained enlightened.
If we didn’t feel good, we shifted to feeling better. We never stayed in the small and always looked for bigger and better. It was just how we did it.
Fast forward… what did we learn?
To live through our hearts. What else did we learn?
The miracle arises in the non questioning.
What else did we learn?
There are no limitations. This is how we Transcend Limitations.
The limitation is in the limitation itself. (That is the cosmic joke.)
We believed there was another way. And every time we succeeded, we wanted to do more and share more. So that is what we did. As we received, we gave. And you know what? It works.
We launched our desires and the universe always answered. We showed up, we sensed and felt, we sent out our truest and highest and biggest desires, and we never questioned the answers. The path always appeared, and we just walked the walk.
We asked, we felt, we trusted, we loved, and it happened.
And with that, we keep going.
Always knowing, always being, always growing. ONWARDS & UPWARDS we continue to grow.
